Welcome back to another Behind the Build. Except this time we are changing things up with Behind the Bryan. After all, when your own coworker builds a car like this, he deserves his own episode.
If you have seen Bryan Aquino's 350Z in previous Drift HQ videos, you probably remember it wearing mismatched black body panels that had definitely seen better days. The team finally convinced Bryan that if his car was going to be featured, it needed to look the part.
Bryan originally wanted to paint the car yellow, but Duarte had other plans. The result is a beautiful Nissan R35 blue that completely transformed the car. Huge credit goes to Josh, who handled the paint work and brought the vision to life.
With the exterior finally matching the quality of the build underneath, it was time to take a closer look at what makes Bryan's 350Z one of the coolest cars around Drift HQ.
Keeping The 1JZ Simple
Powering Bryan's 350Z is a Toyota 1JZ VVTi engine that has evolved over several years of drifting. Like many project cars, it has taught him a few lessons along the way. After an overheating issue, Bryan replaced the engine block and used the opportunity to improve the setup before getting back on track.
Rather than chasing massive horsepower numbers, Bryan focused on building a reliable combination that could take lap after lap of abuse. ARP head bolts, along with Brian Crower Stage One valve springs and retainers, strengthen the engine, while an ECU Master standalone ECU manages everything behind the scenes.
Fuel is supplied by Injector Dynamics ID1050X injectors, while an Artec exhaust manifold and Garrett GBC35 turbocharger provide quick spool and responsive power. On E85, the combination produces around 420 horsepower at roughly 22 PSI, making it a fun and dependable setup for drifting.

Built For Reliability
Anyone who has spent time drifting knows reliability is everything, and Bryan has built this car around that philosophy.
Cooling is handled by a Mishimoto X Line radiator paired with SPAL radiator fans, helping keep temperatures under control during long sessions. One of Bryan's favorite upgrades is the Drift HQ secondary pulley kit, a simple modification that has kept him from throwing accessory belts for years.
After experiencing oil starvation during competition, Bryan upgraded to an Xcessive Manufacturing baffled oil pan to improve oil control during sustained cornering. The Chase Bays power steering kit also simplifies the swap and helps the steering system stay consistent throughout an entire day at the track.

One Transmission That Does It All
One of the biggest highlights of Bryan's build is the 8HP transmission conversion. Rather than sticking with a traditional manual transmission, Bryan wanted a setup that could drift all weekend, cruise comfortably, and eventually see time on a road course.
Making the swap possible is the DomiWorks Engineering 1JZ and 2JZ to 8HP adapter kit, which allows the modern transmission to bolt up to the legendary Toyota JZ engine platform. It forms the foundation of one of the most unique aspects of Bryan's build.
Controlling the transmission is the TurboLamik TCU, giving Bryan complete control over shift strategy and allowing the 8HP transmission to work seamlessly with the rest of the build.
One of Bryan's favorite additions is the PMC Motorsport 8HP shifter. The sequential-style shifter gives the car a true race-car feel while retaining the modern benefits of the 8HP transmission. It looks right at home inside the cockpit and completely changes the driving experience.
It is one of the best examples of combining modern transmission technology with a purpose-built drift car.

A Fuel System Ready To Grow
Bryan also built the fuel system with future upgrades in mind. Instead of building only for his current power level, he wanted something that would leave room to grow.
A Radium Engineering 10-gallon fuel cell paired with the FCST X fuel surge module provides a reliable foundation, while DW320 fuel pumps ensure the engine always has the fuel it needs, whether the car is on track or preparing for future horsepower increases.

A Driver-Focused Interior
Inside the car, everything serves a purpose.
An HGK fiberglass dashboard gives the interior a much cleaner appearance while the Powertune digital dash keeps every important engine parameter easy to monitor.
Bryan also chose Prisma Chromatic seats with matching Prisma FIA harnesses to keep him comfortable and secure behind the wheel. The interior is completed with a Cage Kits Street Spec roll cage that provides excellent protection while still fitting neatly inside the chassis.
The result is an interior that is clean, functional, and built around the driver.

Suspension Built Through Experience
Bryan has spent years refining what works for him, and that experience shows throughout the suspension.
Up front, an FDF Mantis angle kit provides the steering feel and geometry that Bryan prefers while still delivering plenty of steering angle for drifting. Rather than chasing the biggest angle numbers, he believes a balanced setup makes the car faster and more predictable.
Out back, Bryan kept the rear suspension just as practical as the front. A complete Drift HQ rear suspension arm kit provides the adjustability needed to properly align the car, while the Drift HQ dual-caliper bracket delivers reliable hydraulic handbrake performance. Bryan also recommends running FDF axle spacers to help keep the axles properly positioned, and an FDF differential brace reinforces one of the most common weak points on the 350Z platform. Every suspension upgrade on the car was chosen with one goal in mind. Keep the car consistent, predictable, and easy to drive lap after lap.

A Fresh Look To Match The Build
The new paint may be the first thing people notice, but it is far from the only visual improvement.
Bryan spent years driving the car with mismatched body panels because performance always came first. Now the fresh R35 blue paint finally gives the car an exterior that matches everything underneath it.
Anzo headlights modernize the front end while Kansei Roku wheels complete the aggressive stance and tie the whole package together.
It is a car that finally looks just as good sitting in the paddock as it does throwing smoke through a corner.

Bryan Aquino's 350Z is not the result of throwing expensive parts at a project all at once.
