Trailing arms are an integral part of the rear suspension. It locates and controls the rear suspensions movements. In addition it also acts as a mounting point for other components of the rear suspension such as the wheel bearing and upper/lower control arms. For the most part the trailing arm is a lifetime component which may need to have the bushings replaced at one point but it is possible for the trailing arm itself to get damaged where it will need to be replaced as an entire unit.
