Behind the Build: Nathael Jimenez’s LS-Swapped GR86 Proves New Chassis Can Drift
When most people think of drift cars, they picture older, well-worn platforms—cars that have been cheap, available, and modified for decades. A 2022 Toyota GR86 doesn’t usually make that list. That’s exactly why Nathael Jimenez’s build matters.
In this episode of Behind the Build, hosted by Bryan, we take a look at how Nathael—an OG drifter from the Dominican Republic with over 15 years of experience—approached a modern chassis with a budget-first mindset and turned it into a legitimate drift car.

Why a GR86?
Newer chassis are often dismissed in drifting because of cost, complexity, and fear of damaging something “too new.” Nathael took a different approach. Instead of chasing nostalgia or an aging platform, he focused on availability, structure, and long-term potential.
The GR86 offers a lightweight chassis, modern suspension geometry, and growing aftermarket support.
The LS Swap
At the heart of the car is a LS engine, paired with a FAST intake manifold and a 102mm throttle body.
Engine management is handled by a Holley Terminator X ECU, a proven standalone system that delivers reliability and flexibility. Key for a drift car that gets pushed to its limits.
Suspension & Steering Setup
To make a modern chassis work for drifting, suspension and steering are everything.
- An FDF Mantis Angle Kit provides the steering range needed for aggressive driving.
- FDF rear suspension arms allow proper alignment and grip balance.
This combination transforms the GR86 from a street-focused platform into a capable drift chassis.
Braking & Control
The car runs rear dual caliper brackets, allowing independent hydraulic handbrake control while retaining rear braking. This setup is essential for consistency and control, especially on a newer platform.
Fuel & Drivetrain Reliability
Reliability was clearly a priority throughout the build.
- A Radium Engineering surge tank prevents fuel starvation during sustained lateral Gs.
- Driveshaft Shop axles, rated for 1,000 horsepower, handle the abuse of instant torque and clutch kicks.
Chassis Protection
Up front, a True Focus Fabrication front bash bar provides protection while keeping weight down—another sign this car was built to be driven, not just displayed.
More Than Just a Build
